3D Printing at Summer Art Workshop

Technology is becoming an intrinsic part of learning and education and more emphasis is being laid on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). What we fail to focus on is the stream of arts, which is equally important. With the growth of STEM system of study, the importance of arts seems to be diminishing.
But many educational institutions are realizing the importance of arts and are coming forth to incorporate arts into the STEM system to make it the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) which would make education a richer field of study.
The Murray State University held a 5-day workshop called SAW (Summer Art Workshop) where they tried to weave in art forms into STEM education. It was an effort to connect the students and teachers to art. There were lessons on animation, designing using the 3D printing technology and 3D printing was incorporated to teach the students the use of technology in art forms.
The workshop was held from 12th to 16th June 2016 and 56 students participated and learned the art of digitally sculpting models and then printing them on a 3D printer. The various forms, stop motion animation, drawing and animation, art history, and mixed media painting were all discussed by the students under the guidance of the expert Chris Lavery.
The students designed and 3D printed their own models and the number of students participating in this workshop seems to be growing every year. After a talk with a group of freshman students, it was learned that the new era students are showing their interests in various art forms and learning new technologies to take art a step further. The skills and techniques these students learned in this workshop will play a significant role in helping them chose their careers in future.
