In March 2014 Netflix acquired the exclusive rights of the documentary “Print the Legend” and by September 2014 it announced the release date of this documentary. The documentary will be premiered on Netflix in all the territories where Netflix is available. The film has already won a couple of awards such as the 2014 SXSW Film Festival’s special jury recognition award in the fields of editing and storytelling in the documentary.

About Print the Legend

The documentary focuses on the rise and challenges that were faced by companies such as MakerBot and FormLabs when they decided to release the consumer models into the 3D printing market when there were already consumer models of big brand 3D printers like Stratasys and 3D Systems. The film was directed, shot and edited by Luis Lopez and Clay Tweel while the production was done by Steve Klein.

The film also touches the darker side of the 3D printing industry. The film revolves around a man named Cody Wilson and his ambition to design and 3D print a gun. The length of the film is 100 minutes. So far, the film has received a lot of positive feed backs both from critics and the public.

According to an official statement released by Luis Lopez, Clay Tweel, and producer Steven Klein, “From the day we knew 3D printing world would be our focus, we set our sights on a SXSW premiere. To premiere in front of the most tech savvy and entrepreneurial festival crowd in the world and partner with the Netflix documentary team — who work brilliantly at the cutting edge of distribution – is truly a dream come true.”

Not only the trio was happy with the way the film turned out but the Vice President of Netflix Lisa Nishimura said, “It’s so rare for a film to capture history in the making, and Luis Lopez and Clay Tweel have done just that in their skillful presentation of the elation and betrayals experienced by young entrepreneurs detailing the groundbreaking technology of 3D printing.”

Clay Tweel the editor of the film said, “I knew nothing about 3D printing when I walked into the doors of MakerBot nearly two years ago, but working behind the scenes has taught me much about the industry. Maybe one of the bigger things we found out is that additive manufacturing can be used with so many different materials. The concept of the technology can be applied to building items out of metal, wood, concrete and now biological materials in ways that are pretty mind-bending. This is why the potential of 3D printing is so promising, and something we are still genuinely excited about.”

About the Crew

The project was developed, produced and financed by Chad Troutwine and Audax Films led by co- producer Andrew Kortschak and executive producer Walter Kortschak. The film was also produced by Dan O’Meara, Exhibit A Films. Producer Seth Gordon and exec producer Mary Rohlich, led the film making team.

The film was released on 26th September and the documentary can be viewed by the worldwide audience on the Netflix live streaming service.
