‘Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to our imagination and life to everything’ – Plato. To enter the world of music, all we need is a good pair of headphones and a music player. Buying a good pair of fancy headphones would definitely fly out the money from your wallet. Then why to spend without rhyme or reason on those new extravagantly expensive headphones when one can animate one’s boring old headphones with Neopixals and light-weighted 3D printed enclosures to experience the same feel of new headphones? Recently, Adafruit’s Ruiz Brothers have released a video for adding app-controlled LED lights to a pair of headphones with lightweight 3D printed enclosures used to keep everything together.
3D printed headphones had already hit the market and is happening thing right now. This article talks about a project on how can we repair or DIY our old headphones to get the super-cool feel of the new 3D printed headphones. The Adafruit project involves affixing smart LED rings to each side of a pair of headphones. These LED rings contained within a lightweight 3D printed enclosure can be controlled via an iOS or Android device. We can set the LED lights to follow pre-programmed patterns at the touch of a button, choosing the most appropriate color combos for whatever beats gets dropped.
We need four components to make our trendy DIY headphones. These components are – an Adafruit Feather 32u4 Bluefruit LE, a 500mAh Lithium Polymer Battery, two 16x NeoPixel Rings and a Slide Switch. In addition to these components, makers require a 3D printer and various other bits and bobs — and of course a pair of on-ear/over-ear headphones. The 3D printed enclosures are best suited for people having flat ear cups headphones not covered by the headband.
PLA material is recommended in the 3D printing process as the other materials need a heated printing bed. With the help Autodesk Fusion 360, the 3D printable parts are designed and created for this project. The brothers printed their accessories with a Flashforge Creator Pro dual-extruder 3D printer, and yeah, we are all set for our DIY project!
